My daughter was born in the summer, which meant she started kindergarten the year she turned six instead of five. This seemingly small difference has created significant challenges in her journey as an athlete. Currently, under the guidelines of the USSSA Fastpitch Softball leagues, my daughter can only play with her classmates on travel teams in alternate years due to the birth year cutoff, as she doesn't fit into the prescribed age brackets.

This is more than just playing a sport; it's about being with her peers, forming lifelong friendships, and building skills that go beyond the field. Many organizations are establishing first-year and second-year teams, a reasonable approach to ensure balanced competition and skill development. However, the current regulations mean that for girls like my daughter, the opportunity to play with their peers consistently is not an option. This becomes particularly disheartening come senior year, as my daughter may not even have a team to play with.

In contrast, USSSA Baseball already has a grade exemption policy in place, which allows boys to compete with their classmates, prioritizing education and peer-based competition over an arbitrary age cutoff. This same exemption should be extended to girls in fastpitch softball. Why should female athletes be denied the same opportunities as their male counterparts?

We now call upon USSSA Fastpitch Softball to introduce a grade exemption policy. This change will ensure fairness and equality for all players currently disadvantaged by the existing birth year constraints. Providing a grade exemption aligns with similar measures taken by baseball and demonstrates respect for the unique educational decisions families make for their children.

By adopting this change, USSSA Fastpitch Softball can continue to be a leader in youth sports, promoting inclusivity and fairness. Such an adjustment not only enhances the girls' playing experience but also underscores the organization's commitment to supporting their athletes' growth, both in sports and socially.
