Advocate for City Sponsored Recreation Football Teams in Norfolk

The Issue

Born and raised in Park Place, I know first-hand the struggles that families who are just making ends meet face, especially when it comes to funding their children's participation in local sports activities. Today’s competitive football leagues, like AFL, often result in less fortunate families being left out, denying their children the chance to grow and develop through sport. Football has always been more than just a game; it is a platform for character development and a tool for keeping at-risk youth off the streets.  Having to pay hundreds of dollars in fees at sign-up, and upwards of $10 entry fees per family member to attend games is more of a money grab that most just can’t afford in today's society.

The city's Parks and Recreation department should sponsor community football teams to ensure equal opportunities regardless of a family's financial capabilities. Lakewood was once a safe haven to robust recreation football activities creating a conducive environment where youth can engage, learn and grow. We want to recreate this tradition.

Statistically, participation in community sports has been linked to lower crime rates, reduced drug use, and better academic performance, reinforcing the need for affordable access to community sports activities. Nationwide participation in sports holds a high retention rate of 70% for low-income youth, encouraging their continuous engagement in positive community-led initiatives.[1]

By signing this petition, you are advocating for the Parks and Recreation department to fund and support community football teams, reinstating the essence of community sports, making a difference, and promoting equal opportunities for all. Let’s bring back recreation football to Lakewood!
