I am a parent of a wonderful child who, like many others in our community, has special needs. My son loves playing outside but is often limited by the design of typical playgrounds. This story is not unique to us; many families in Southport, NC and surrounding towns face the same challenge daily. We believe that every child deserves the joy of play and inclusion.

A local committee has proposed an inclusive playground at Taylor Field Park - a park already equipped with paved parking and bathrooms. This playground would cater to everyone, including those with mobility issues and disabilities. However, some residents are opposing this initiative out of fear it may disrupt their livelihood or lower property values.

This perspective overlooks the importance of inclusivity and equal opportunities for all children to play, learn and grow together. According to Kids Included Together (KIT), inclusive playgrounds promote physical health, social interaction and sensory stimulation for all kids while fostering understanding among differently-abled peers.
