I am writing this petition to bring attention to the non-ethical practices occurring at the Star of Hope Cornerstone in Houston, Texas. This issue is deeply personal to me because of the heartbreaking mistreatment of residents, including acts of neglect and even illegal activities that have come to my attention.

Residents have been subjected to unsafe and unhealthy conditions, which include the serving of expired, under-cooked, and potentially hazardous food. This has led to numerous health issues among the residents who are already vulnerable and in need of care. Furthermore, there have been alarming incidents of disregard for serious food allergies, posing significant health risks to the residents.

The situation worsens as there are accounts of theft of residents' personal property and most recently a disturbing exposure of residents to active addicts, which undermines the mission and safety of the shelter. One of the most devastating instances includes the refusal of staff to render necessary aid, leading to the premature stillbirth of a resident's baby. Such inhumane treatment cannot be allowed to continue.

Moreover, residents are being denied access to payment ledgers, hindering their ability to manage their financial affairs effectively. Transparency should be paramount in these facilities, yet it is regrettably absent.

The abuses at this facility under the guise of "help" need to be stopped immediately. It is not a "half-way house" as the majority of residents are not on probation or parole. Star of Hope Cornerstone further hinders residents from seeking and obtaining gainful employment for a period of 4-6 months; impeding progress to self sufficiency and successful completion of the program. 

The current program further harms residents by lack of transparency regarding potential exposure to communicable diseases, lack of confidentiality by openly gossiping about Residents, creating false narratives about Residents, and not providing proper written documentation of "infractions" or providing clear protocol for disciplinary actions, and omitting or not submitting the necessary documentation or information to assist Residents in finding and obtaining stable permanent housing in a timely manner, if at all.

The Google reviews pertaining to this facility are not fabrications, the incidents documented by current and former residents are real, there is by and large no demonstration of Godliness or Christian values at the facility with the exception of a handful of staff who see the mistreatment but do not speak out due to fear of retaliation.

The Star of Hope Cornerstone is meant to be a place of refuge and hope for those in need, not one where ethical standards are neglected and residents are further put at risk. I urge the community, the Houston City Council, and Mayor Whitmire to investigate these issues thoroughly and ensure that adequate corrective measures are taken to restore the integrity of this essential institution.
