The prevalence of lung cancer in non-smokers is often overlooked owing to the misconception that lung cancer only occurs in those who smoke heavily. In reality, almost 16% of women and 10% of men with a new diagnosis of lung cancer had never smoked, according to the American Cancer Society. Lung cancer in never smokers is the 5th leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. 

Lung cancer rates in non-smokers affect certain demographics disproportionately. Particularly, over 70% of Asian women diagnosed with lung cancer are non-smokers. Cases of lung cancer in non-smoking Asian women are normally diagnosed at later stages, when the cancer is more advanced and difficult to treat.

We call for greater awareness among the public, students, families, and communities that lung cancer can occur in non-smokers, especially Asian women. Early recognition of symptoms and discussion with healthcare providers are vital, particularly among the Asian American women as a high risk population. We urge more focused research on genetic, environmental, and other biological factors relevant to lung cancer patients in non-smoking Asian women. We seek support for lung cancer research in non-smokers from local policymakers.

We encourage health organizations and local Asian American communities to hold public education events twice a year to raise awareness, with the participation of physicians and medical researchers. We also encourage health organizations and Asian American organizations to organize an annual fundraiser to support lung cancer research in non-smoking Asian women, such as UCSF’s FANS (Female Asian Never Smokers) Study.

Lastly, we advocate for local policy makers to recognize this issue and call for increased research on this matter.
