Why this petition matters
Started by Kelsey Hynes
Our children in Alberta deserve better than what is proposed in this new curriculum. The Alberta government has put forth a curriculum that:
- Does not allow children of color or Indigenous backgrounds to see themselves and their history reflected
- Does not account for students with special needs
- Does not promote critical thinking and current accepted learning practices
- Promotes religion in a way that is not suited for the classroom
- Puts huge pressure on students to learn incredibly large concepts before they are developmentally able to
The proposed curriculum has passed through the hands of a UCP chosen advisory panel consisting of many individuals who have never spent time in a classroom with students in these grade levels. It is a curriculum that is nothing that Albertans can be proud of, and has already seen our educational partners not choose it for their own provinces or territories. This curriculum needs to be started over from scratch and the feedback from actual practicing educators needs to be considered and incorporated.
