Adopt the UN Treaty on the High Seas 2023

Adopt the UN Treaty on the High Seas 2023
The issue
During World War II, my father played a pivotal role in Australia’s war effort, traveling extensively across various islands in the South Pacific Ocean. He gained a profound respect and awareness for the ocean’s significance, understanding the intricate connection between human activity, ocean health, and climate change. Growing up, he instilled in me a deep appreciation for the ocean as an essential force, one that can nurture and sustain human life. In his footsteps, I too champion the need to protect our oceans.
The urgency to adopt the UN Treaty on the High Seas 2023 cannot be overstated. This landmark framework aims to safeguard biodiversity, regulate exploitation, and secure the crucial role the ocean plays in sustaining life on Earth. The ocean acts as our planet’s climate regulator, absorbing carbon dioxide while providing oxygen for us to breathe. Yet, without decisive and immediate action, our oceans' vital systems face imminent collapse, threatening irreversible damage to our planet's future.
The UN Treaty stands as a beacon of hope, an actionable set of rules and guidelines to ensure the sustainable management and conservation of the high seas, which constitute almost half of our planet's surface. This treaty will empower international cooperation to mitigate environmental impacts and ensure the equitable sharing of marine resources.
However, time is of the essence. Scientific reports indicate that species extinction rates continue to climb, and overfishing has put tremendous strain on marine ecosystems. With the adoption of the UN Treaty on the High Seas 2023, we have a unique opportunity to reverse these trends and instill policies that will provide lasting protection for marine life, which, in turn, strengthens our planet's health.
Our oceans are irreplaceable, and the future of humanity hinges on their resilience. We must urge global leaders to ratify and implement this treaty to pave the way for sustainable ocean stewardship. I call upon you, not just as individuals but as custodians of this planet, to sign this petition. Join me in urging our leaders to adopt the UN Treaty on the High Seas 2023. Together, let’s ensure the ocean’s vitality for generations to come.
