As you have likely heard since our last update, Chief Williams has resigned and Lt. Nichelini has been reinstated.
Also, we learned in the past week that the city of Vallejo has destroyed tapes of interviews in police shootings in violation of its record destruction policy.
Now the City of Vallejo has scheduled a series of special meetings to implement a Police Oversight Ordinance before the end of the year:
- Tuesday, December 6, 2022 (Workshop)
- Monday, December 12, 2022 (Workshop and/or possible introduction)
- Thursday, December 15, 2022 (Tentative and possible introduction of the ordinance)
- Tuesday, December 20, 2022 (Possible adoption of POM ordinance)
The draft of the City's proposed ordinance (18 pages) can be found here. Compare to the latest Common Ground draft ordinance (36 pages) here.
Anne Carr has written an excellent summary of why we need to put the brakes on this rushed action by City Council. We need as many people as possible to attend the council meeting this Tuesday at 6 pm at city hall.

Urgent Call to Action!
We need you at City Hall, In Person, Tuesday, Dec. 6, 6pm.
This may be our ONLY chance to influence the Police Oversight Model. Right now, the City plans to take comments on Dec 6, and vote it in as quickly as Dec 12! Yup -- they've had years to do this work, and we get as little as one night. Heck, we might get two hearings, but it's not guaranteed. Do not be fooled by the "living document" BS. Once it's voted it's done.
Do you agree with any of the following? If so, call, write, show up and/or speak up!
- The City needs to hold more community meetings before they vote -- and NOT at the busiest time of year!
- At minimum, meetings should be held in each of the districts, and especially in neighborhoods of color who have been most impacted by police violence and wrongful death.
- The FAMILIES and FRIENDS of those killed or injured deserve particular consideration and chance for input.
- The "draft" ordinance should get a minimum 30-45 day review period for people to submit comments and edits -- not 6 days!!!!
- Cramming additional "hearings" into the holiday period and a 2-week timeframe does not cut it.
- The community deserves to hear the input of Common Ground. They've worked through many versions of a Police Oversight Model, we want to hear from them!
- The incoming City Council -- with the 3 new Council members -- should be the ones doing the final vote.
- The PROCESS of finalizing a Police Oversight Model is as important as the product itself.
YOU CANNOT IMPROVE COMMUNITY RELATIONS WITHOUT, IN FACT, INTERACTING WITH THE COMMUNITY!!!
Please share this broadly.
PLEASE attend in person, and bring friends!
If you can't attend, please call or email Council. Email Council anyway!
