Adopt the Alamo-Rose Window San Antonio Flag | Redesign the Current City Flag

The Issue

I have lived in San Antonio all my life, deeply caring about this city's heritage and future. A city as beautiful as ours deserves an equally beautiful flag—one that unifies communities, encourages civic engagement, fosters local pride, and serves as a powerful symbol of identity. While our current flag has served us well, it has not achieved widespread adoption among residents. Even the Alamo—our most iconic landmark—is poorly drawn and barely visible. As Texas Monthly critiques, "the star [in the current flag] is too big, if only because it reduces the Alamo to a crude depiction. While it’s actually small in real life, the Alamo looms so much larger in the public imagination." Moreover, the current flag omits the San Antonio quatrefoil, a historically significant symbol replicated throughout the city's branding and public art.

To address these shortcomings, I am proposing the adoption of my redesigned 'Alamo-Rose Window' flag. This new design incorporates the same core elements as the current flag—colors, star, and Alamo—but elevates them with greater emphasis and meaning. The iconic Rose Window (quatrefoil) is seamlessly integrated into the Alamo silhouette, aligning with our existing city branding while celebrating a symbol rooted in our history. Additionally, the Alamo is now the flag’s centerpiece, rendered in a way that is far more prominent and visually striking than on the current flag. This responds directly to Texas Monthly’s observation that our current design "incorporat[es] an icon rather than the embodiment of one." In preserving the heritage of the existing flag, the Alamo-Rose Window design presents a modern, visually appealing alternative that better reflects our city’s identity.

A well-designed flag has the potential to inspire pride, foster unity, and even boost economic activity. According to the North American Vexillological Association (NAVA), cities with distinctive and beloved flags—such as Chicago and Washington, D.C.—have seen their flags become powerful symbols of civic pride and drivers of cultural tourism. San Antonio has a similar opportunity to make its mark. As city leaders continue to focus on revitalizing downtown and promoting local businesses, a new city flag can generate excitement, attract visitors, and create a shared sense of purpose among residents.

I understand the importance of preserving history and continuity, which is why I suggest that our current flag could be redesignated as San Antonio’s official Historic or city Flag Emeritus. It can continue to be flown at City Hall, the Alamo, and other sites of importance or government function. However, by adopting the Alamo-Rose Window flag, we can celebrate our heritage while embracing a brighter future. This new flag encapsulates the story of San Antonio, presenting it in a way that unites us and strengthens our city’s image, both locally and beyond.

Let us adopt the Alamo-Rose Window design as a symbol of cultural heritage, pride, and unity among all San Antonians. Please sign and share this petition if you agree that it’s time for San Antonio to embrace a new, vibrant flag for the benefit of our community and future generations!
