Adopt Deep Ellum's Official Poem
Adopt Deep Ellum's Official Poem
The Issue
Deep Ellum's residents and visitors are profoundly impacted by the neighborhood's rich yet often overlooked history. This vibrant area, renowned for its art, music, and cultural diversity, has stories that remain largely untold. Without a tangible connection to its past, the community risks losing a vital part of its identity, leaving future generations unaware of the roots that have shaped this iconic neighborhood.
If "Deeper The Root" by Derrick Walker is adopted as Deep Ellum's official poem, it will serve as a permanent reminder of the area's historical significance. This change will ensure that the rich tapestry of Deep Ellum's heritage is preserved and celebrated. Conversely, if no action is taken, these stories may continue to fade, and the cultural depth of Deep Ellum could be overshadowed by modern developments, erasing a crucial part of its identity.
Now is the time to act because we have a unique opportunity to bridge the past, present, and future. Derrick Walker's poignant poem has already resonated deeply with those who have heard it, and incorporating it officially will cement its place in history.
By signing this petition, we can honor Deep Ellum's legacy and ensure that its vibrant history is not only remembered but also celebrated for generations to come.
Join us in making "Deeper The Root" the official poem of Deep Ellum, and help preserve the essence of this extraordinary neighborhood.
Deeper The Root
Written by, D. R. Walker
The deeper the root
The sweeter the fruit
Nobody in this world
goes deeper than you
The deeper the roots
The sweeter the fruits
Past, present, future
Nothing goes deeper than you
This moment
Is deeper
Than truth
Black souls
On Black soil
Black songs
From Black folks
Down deep
On elm
We the people
Of a freedman’s town
With a southern drawl
Is where deep Ellum
Was found
The’only Black intellect
Only Texas’ first black architect
Could erect a monument
That even his in-law’s
Would not forget
I'm talking about
The namesake
of the Black school
In Dallas
Booker T. Washington
William Sydney Pittman
Designed this building
Just up the street
Black history
Black present
Black future
And even black presence
The gift that continues
To Give what it’s always gave
There’s nothing deeper than elm
Just like there’s nothing
Deeper than you
