Adjust the schedule, not the clock

The Issue

It’s so logical: let people start work earlier in summer to utilise the daylight, and later in winter to avoid the freezing, dark mornings. No need to mess with time itself! But no — humans said, "Let’s just pretend it's a different time altogether!"

It’s one of those things humanity did once, thought it was clever, and now can’t admit it was a dumb idea.

Every year, we’re forced to change our clocks twice — for no good reason. We lose sleep, disrupt our routines, and pretend that moving the clock forward or back somehow makes the sun behave differently. It doesn’t.

Let’s call it what it is: pointless and outdated.

Daylight Saving Time (DST) was introduced in the early 20th century — during a time of war, coal stoves, and gas lamps. But we’re living in the 21st century. Our modern energy use, health needs, and work patterns no longer justify this biannual disruption.

Studies show DST is barely effective; it just messes with sleep, increases accidents, and causes confusion for families, children, workers, and international businesses alike.

Even the EU voted to end it back in 2019. The plan was to scrap it by 2021. Then… nothing. As usual, they couldn’t agree on the details, and it’s been stuck in limbo ever since.

There’s a better way.

Adjust working hours, not the clocks. Start work earlier in the summer to make use of the light, and start later in the winter to avoid dark and icy mornings. Simple. Smart. Human.

We don’t need to manipulate time — we just need to use our common sense.

What we’re asking:

We, the undersigned, call on the UK Government to abolish Daylight Saving Time permanently and end this needless disruption. We believe the UK should adopt British Summer Time (BST) all year round. Why?

Lighter evenings improve well-being — people are more active, social, and safe after work.
Most people are indoors in the mornings, so darker mornings don’t affect us nearly as much.
Dark evenings are depressing, especially for those struggling with mental health.
Let’s not go backward to GMT forever and make our winters even gloomier.
Let’s move forward — keep BST and ditch the switch.

Enough is enough. It’s time for time to make sense.
