Adjust LPS High school 2024-2025 Schedule | Homeroom, start time, etc.
The Issue
The LPS High school 2024-2025 Schedule has mixed feelings and concerns coming from students [10% (Positive), 10%(Neutral), 80%(Negative)]. Students have addressed their concerns via StuVoicesOfLynn, a community where students opinions are heard. A survey was released with a total of 30 respondents [66.7% (LEHS), 30% (LCHS), 3.3% (LVTI)] who gave their opinions on the matter. Although there are only a handful of responses, the voices of students shouldn't be left unheard because the impact of one voice can impact hundreds. High school students, primarily 11th/12th graders [10% (10th), 66.7% (11th), 23.3% (12th)], expressed that the 2024-2025 Schedule has some benefits. For example, they mentioned the removal of 2 hr classes. However, there are more downsides to it than most realize. Students said that some classes have little time (about 50 minutes) to get education instruction out to students, which isn't enough for most students. On the other hand, some students mentioned it's nice to have shorter class times because it helps them concentrate more. Additionally, it removes homeroom which is a crucial aspect in student life; recieving announcements and preparing for the school day [19/30 student responses]. If students aren't prepared, it'll be impossible to learn. Moreover, school starts at 7:45 A.M which disrupts the preparation of students before school [22/30 student responses]. Most students have to take care of their siblings and have personal responsibilities. By having school start 15 minutes earlier, it could determine a greater amount of students arriving late to school, which is already an issue. Also, the early start doesn't only take away from students mornings, but their sleep as well since they would have to get up even earlier than before. Following, the schedule is confusing for students [24/30 student responses]. Without a proper schedule that satisfies student needs, students will be immensely stressed out on top of the negative additions to the schedule. If it hasn't been emphasized enough, high school students need their voices to be heard. In doing so, the current problem would move the start time to 8 A.M, add homeroom back to the schedule, and resolve student worries. If we don't act now, student life could be ruined and their voices could never be heard again.
