Addressing the Educational Gap and Lack of Resources in Indigenous Communities

Addressing the Educational Gap and Lack of Resources in Indigenous Communities

The Issue

Education is a fundamental right that should be accessible to all, yet Indigenous communities in Canada continue to face significant barriers to receiving the education they deserve.

We have recognized and identified the gaps in education in Indigenous communities as it is reflected in the Quality Education article released by the Government of Canada in 2018. The statistics listed in the article state that 44% of First Nations on-reserve (age 18-24) have completed high school, compared to 88% for the rest of the nation. There have not been any updates on the statistics, nor have there been any recent statistics released by the Government of Ontario
For a more recent report, in 2021 the Canadian Federation of Students released a fact sheet on Indigenous education. They stated that the “educational attainment between the Indigenous and non-Indigenous populations in Ontario. 65% of the non-Indigenous population has some form of post-secondary education, compared to only 53% of the Indigenous population (ages 24-65).”

Education is important for the development of a nation, but how can the nation move forward if inequities remain unaddressed? Despite the undeniable fact that Indigenous communities in Ontario face persistent and severe educational disparities, the Ontario government continues to turn a blind eye to this issue, leaving many Indigenous communities without the resources and opportunities they need to succeed.

What are we gonna do:

To address this issue, a micro-initiative has been launched to send petitions to schools and gather signatures in support of increasing resources and addressing the educational gap in Indigenous communities. This initiative aims to raise awareness and advocate for change at the policy level, ultimately leading to a brighter future for Indigenous youth across the province.

What are we asking:

We believe that every child deserves access to quality education, and we invite you to join us in this important cause by signing our petition and showing your support for Indigenous communities in Ontario.
