The Issue

In our cherished community of Honeypark and Cualanor, Dún Laoghaire, Dublin, the rise in youth crime and public nuisance has become alarmingly apparent. This issue is not just statistics; it is deeply personal to many of us. Local businesses like Tesco, costa coffee, base wood fired pizza, among others are suffering from vandalism and hooliganism on a daily basis. My own family and neighbors have unfortunately been victims of assaults, leaving us feeling vulnerable and desperate for change.

Our community is grappling with daily disruptions that include vandalism, theft, anti-social behavior, and violence that is often perpetuated by youths. Despite repeated calls for action, the response from the government and Garda policies seems inadequate and ineffective in addressing these challenges.

Current approaches fail to deter repeated offenders and provide them with the necessary intervention for rehabilitation. A reliance on inadequate surveillance and policing strategies has allowed many young offenders to act with impunity, leaving community members to live in fear.

It's time for decisive action to create a safer, more peaceful environment. We propose the establishment of community-centered youth engagement programs and enhanced Garda partnerships with our local councils to develop proactive strategies that focus on prevention and intervention. Implementing mentorship and educational opportunities for young people could channel their energies positively, reducing crime and engendering respect for the community.

Furthermore, increasing the presence of community Gardaí and cctv surveillance to reassure residents and swiftly handle emerging issues is vital and including private patrolling officers from the management company to enforce rule of law and prevent crime by youth. Enhanced support for victims of crime through easy access to counseling and legal assistance is necessary to help our community heal. Accountability for hooliganism the neighbouring businesses are subjected to. The culprits must be brought to justice on every single incident and their parents must be involved every single time with proper criminal charges added for repeat offenders!

We no longer accept to be a victim to laws that cannot protect us, subjected to humiliation in our communities, and every time sent off to heal our own wounds when the culprits are just politely asked to leave only to return and repeat their offenses.

Crime affects us all, and together we can work towards effective solutions that prioritize safety, community, and rehabilitation. We need your support to bring urgency to this issue and prompt our leaders to act. Please sign this petition to demand stronger, community-focused solutions to youth crime and nuisance in Dún Laoghaire.
