ADDRESS Water and Odor Pollution in city's Public Drainage Systems!

ADDRESS Water and Odor Pollution in city's Public Drainage Systems!
The Issue
WHY THIS PETITION MATTERS
— Everyday going home from school I pass by seeing these drainage systems implemented everywhere in Cagayan de Oro city. Then by sometimes I take a look to see how fare are the drainages holding on since it especially collects rain.
By curiosity, I went near it and looked inside by the flashlight from my phone, to my surprise and horror it smelt really bad, and there, heaped inside the drain, was a disgusting mix of plastic wrappers, rotting food scraps, and mold-covered sludge, all piling up.
This was located in a busy area surrounded by several malls, yet the state of the drainage was still deeply concerning considering how many people have forced trash in its narrow opening.
I urge the local government and its agencies to help:
-
Implement regular and publicly visible maintenance of drainage systems across all area, ensuring they're kept clear of waste and debris.
-
Install trash guards or filters at key drainage points to prevent blockages and reduce waste buildup.
-
Launch public education campaigns about proper waste disposal, emphasizing its direct impact on flooding and drainage systems.
- Place visible warning signs near drainage entry points that clearly state dumping waste into canals or drainage systems is prohibited, with penalties; such as fines or community service- for violators.
By that, in effect, the people will surely to do the part by: Properly disposing of waste, not dumping in drains, and spreading awareness about clogged drains can make a big difference. Small actions from all of us can help keep the city safer and cleaner.
- Sustainable Cities Need Clean Drainage: The Philippine Clean Water Act (RA 9275) mandates the maintenance of water quality, including stormwater systems. Local government units are required to implement control measures against waste discharge into waterways.
