Address unfair penalization of Ontario student athletes
The Issue
Recent policy updates released by the Ontario Ministry of Education regarding attendance requirements do not adequately accommodate student athletes and risk post secondary opportunities.
This policy jeopardizes not just immediate educational prospects, but also future aspirations in both academia and athletics.
Student-athletes in Ontario dedicate immense time and effort to excel in both their academic and athletic endeavors. However, the new attendance requirement policies do not accommodate the unique demands of student-athletes who need to miss classes for legitimate competitive events. These unjust policies result in penalties that can impact grades, scholarships, and future opportunities.
By some estimates, in Ontario, more than 200,000 student-athletes participate in provincial, national, and even international competitions representing their schools and communities. Not only do these student-athletes bring honor and recognition, but they also promote a healthy, active lifestyle which is beneficial for the entire school environment. Schools should be fostering and supporting their dual pursuits by providing flexible and reasonable attendance requirements instead of dampening their potential.
The main objective of this petition is to advocate for the policy change in the attendance system to accommodate student-athletes better. We propose implementing a system where student-athletes can be excused from classes without penalties for official sports events with prior appropriate documentation and verification.
Join me in urging educational policymakers in Ontario to reform attendance policies that are at risk of harming student-athletes who strive to balance their educational commitments with their athletic dreams. Let's ensure our kids can continue to excel both in the classroom and on the field without unfair penalizations. Sign this petition to make a positive change for our student-athletes and safeguard their multifaceted future!
