Two days ago, our family dog became a victim of the escalating coyote problem plaguing San Fernando Valley. In the blink of an eye, our beloved pet of over eight years was viciously attacked and killed in our own yard, an incident that has left us heartbroken. Unfortunately, we're not alone. Numerous families across the Valley tell similar stories of loss and trauma.

Coyotes are now boldly intruding into suburban neighborhoods, showing remarkably little fear of humans. This shift in behavior leaves every resident at a potential risk. So far, pets have borne the brunt of the attacks, but who is to say that given enough hunger, desperation, and acclimation, coyotes won't begin to target the most vulnerable among us, especially small children it may perceive as prey?

According to a report by the University of Chicago, coyote encounters with humans are on the rise in urban areas across the US, and they're becoming more aggressive (Wogan G. PNAS, 2021). This evidence validates our cries for help. It's a problem that has grown beyond mere nuisance to a public safety issue.

We are desperate for immediate, decisive action to mitigate this problem. We propose a comprehensive approach that combines assertive wildlife management, public education on living safely with wildlife, and ordinances to limit access to food sources for these animals.

We can't wait for the situation to worsen before acting. We've lost cherished family pets and we might lose more, possibly even those most vulnerable among us, if we don't respond now.
