Provide appropriate treatment for patients with Borderline Personality Disorder

The Issue

Borderline Personality Disorder affects an estimated 1% of the UK population, and has the highest suicide rate of any mental disorder. The NHS still embodies an antiquated and inappropriate stigma towards these patients, whose chronic illness debilitates and isolates them 24/7.

The disorder, attributed to childhood trauma and stunted amygdala and hippocampus development results in painful emotional dysregulation and complex comorbities. It is treatable with DBT, yet many find difficulty in accessing this service, which is severely underfunded. Borderline Personality Disorder receives on average 1/6 of the funding that Bipolar receives, despite the significantly higher death toll. Waiting lists are far too long and many services turn away borderlines due to miseducation and its negative associations with other Cluster B personality disorders. General estimates indicate that up to 85% of sufferers will make at least one suicide attempt in their life time, and 10% succeed. It can happen to anyone, and it's disgusting that our government overlooks severe mental disorders when people die waiting for or having been denied treatment every single day. Please sign and draw attention to this epidemic, after receipt of treatment, almost 50% of sufferers will recover significantly within 2 years, and 88% in 10 years.
