Address housing inequality in Riverside
Address housing inequality in Riverside
The Issue
Growing up in Riverside, I cherished the strong sense of community and the wealth of opportunities available to its residents. However, over the past few years, I’ve witnessed a concerning transformation within our community. Rising property prices and increasing rent costs have created rampant housing inequality, effectively pushing longtime residents and low-income families out of their homes. This personal experience has pushed me to speak out and advocate for change, as maintaining inclusive and equitable housing is essential for the city’s prosperity.
The issue at hand is not a minor one: Riverside has seen a sharp increase in housing costs, with property prices rising by over 15% in the last year alone. This is significantly higher than the national average and leaves many families struggling to make ends meet. A study conducted by the National Low Income Housing Coalition revealed that a Riverside resident, earning the average wage, would need to work 70 hours a week to afford a modest two-bedroom apartment. This disproportionate burden is unsustainable and creates an urgent need for intervention.
We propose that the Riverside City Council implements policies aimed at providing more affordable housing options. This could include incentives for developers to build affordable units, measures to protect current renters, and strategic investments in community land trusts to ensure long-term affordability. Moreover, increasing public funding for housing assistance programs and establishing rent control measures could offer immediate relief to those most affected by this crisis.
Our vibrant and diverse city can only thrive if everyone has access to a secure and affordable place to live. Riverside's strength lies in its community, and it's crucial that we strive to protect the fabric of our city from being torn apart by housing inequity.
Join me in urging the Riverside City Council to take decisive action against housing inequality. Your signature can make a difference, showing our leaders that we demand a fair and inclusive housing future for all residents. Please sign this petition to support equitable access to housing in Riverside.
