Address Contaminated Water in Texas Prisons and medical issues

The Issue

My loved one is currently incarcerated at the Luther Unit, and what I am witnessing is beyond alarming. Men in this facility are breaking out with rashes, suffering from unexplained illnesses, and tragically, some have even died. The medical department remains baffled by these health issues, and the official reports often cite heart failure as the cause of death. Yet, this explanation doesn't capture the full scope of what's truly happening behind these walls.

The situation is exacerbated by the dire state of the water supply. Over 90 samples have shown dangerously high levels of metallic and bacterial contaminants including lead, arsenic, and E. coli. This is not just a violation of basic human rights but a severe public health crisis. How many more men will fall sick, or worse, succumb to these conditions before action is taken?

Our prisons are meant to rehabilitate, not harm. Yet, the current state of affairs at the Luther Unit and likely other facilities across Texas is causing irreversible damage to those inside. The health and well-being of these men are being compromised by negligence and a lack of accountability.

This crisis demands immediate intervention from state authorities to overhaul the sanitation systems and improve health care provisions in prisons. We need transparency and decisive action to address water contamination and unexplained health issues. I urge Texas legislators, the Department of Criminal Justice, and health authorities to prioritize the lives of those in custody by implementing comprehensive health and safety measures.

Stand with me in advocating for these changes to protect the lives of those incarcerated in Texas prisons. Your signature on this petition can push authorities to initiate necessary reforms.
