The site and noise of cars speeding down Addison Road every day is something that we have become increasingly used to, at speeds that are far greater than 20mph. A Road Traffic Collison (RTC) which occurred on Addison Rd in the early hours of 19th July is currently being investigated by the WM Police Collision Investigation Unit – suggesting that there is either a fatality of life-changing injury. This coincides with Birmingham Council recently declaring a Road Safety Emergency.

Aside from the risk the speeding vehicles poses to other vehicles, it poses a huge risk to other road users who transit along or through Addison Rd, particularly with a large number of schools being in this vicinity. Should this continue, it is surely only a matter of time until there are further injuries or even fatalities. 

Whilst it is clear there are future plans for Addison Rd within the People for Places scheme (formerly known as LTN), we feel that this a more pressing issue associated with speed calming measures and proper implementation of the 20mph speed limit along Addison Rd – a move that would be designed to keep road users safe. 

A recent meeting with Councillor Jordan Phillip was productive about the ways forward, and therefore we require your backing to give evidence and support behind the need for speed-calming measures such as speed cushions along Addison Rd. 

Other roads around Kings Heath (e.g. Springfield Road) have implemented speed calming to good effect, and petitions in other neighbourhoods around Birmingham have highlighted similar issues such to ours, which are being investigated and addressed at a Council level.
