Mahalo nui loa to you all for your support of the Native Hawaiians and all of Kauai's ohana who have been vigilantly opposing the helicopter drop of 10 tons of 'restricted use' rat poison on the sacred island of Lehua. Sadly, the State of Hawai`i ultimately decided to approve the final permit for the first of three applications to be aerial sprayed across Lehua over the next couple of weeks. The first of these poison spraying has commenced, but the following two drops of this poison will need additional approval from the Department of Agriculture. As we mourn for the island of Lehua and her many creatures that will now suffer an agonizing death, we must also remember how Native and Indigenous peoples, and families all over this world, are being poisoned by the toxic chemicals and hazardous waste contaminating the water and food systems that all life depends on for survival. We are so grateful to you all for your support of the Hawaiian people and their sacred islands and beautiful wildlife. Your petition signatures and comments, as well as your phone calls and emails, made a huge difference in convincing the Chair of Hawaii's Department of Agriculture, Scott Enright, to closely monitor this operation and scrutinize the impacts more comprehensively than before. He has also stated that there will be careful consideration prior to the approval of the next two applications. We are hopeful that Scott Enright will keep his promise; and in the mean time, many locals will be keeping a close watch. We are now preparing our strategies for Phase 2 of this opposition. And we need your help! You can continue to support Kauai's Hawaiians and fishers who have stood strong in their opposition of this poison drop by helping to crowdsource a campaign designed to effectively and permanently 'Stop the Drop' of these types toxic poisonings from ever happening again, in Hawaii or anywhere else in the world!!! Please join our Facebook group 'It Takes a Village Kauai' and help us to crowdsource even more comprehensive research, FOIA requests, legal action, and innovative ideas.
