The people on the steering committee for the Lehua Poison Drop are attempting to eradicate the rats from the island of Lehua with 10+ TONS of RAT POISON -- aerial sprayed by helicopter. But even in their Environmental Assessment they state that they expect other wildlife to be killed by the rat poison, as well as by helicopter strikes. Seabirds, owls, hawks and herons are all at risk of primary and secondary poisoning. And because of the steep slopes of the island, this rat poison will also wash into the ocean, affecting a mutitude of marine life. The aquatic wildlife at risk of primary and secondary poisoning from the rat poison includes endangered monk seals and sea turtles; as well as spinner dolphin, humpback whales, tropical fish, coral reefs, and many other forms of sea life. We are asking the government agencies approving this aerial spraying of rat poison to 'Stop the Drop!' and allow the Native Hawaiians time to use their knowledge and understanding of Hawaii's natural ecosystems to help find a better -- non-toxic -- and more humane way to remove the rats from their sacred island of Lehua. The people of Kaua`i, along with every one of you who are supporting the Native Hawaiians by making phone calls to government officials and signing the petition, have now successfully delayed 2 helicopter drops of rat poison just in the last 2 weeks -- but there is another one scheduled for less than two weeks away!
