Tēnā koutou,
My name is Kim - I'm on the Deaf Action committee.
We making this video because MBIE hasn't made any NZSL video access to their review of the Building Code. We did ask MBIE to do this a few weeks ago.
As there's only a very short time left before the 6 Dec deadline, we've made a single issue petition.
Do you remember in 2016 - Deaf Action made a petition to Parliament to have Visual Alerting Devices added to the Building Code?
NZS 4512:2021 was updated with the technical specs for VADs. See www link in the petition.
MBIE is now reviewing the Building Code and Visual Alerting Devices have been mentioned in the review.
We're using this petition to show the support for Visual Alerting Devices to be added to Public spaces. E.g. Hotels, Motels, Shopping Malls, Universities, Schools etc in the Building Code.
This is important for over 880,000 Deaf/Hard of Hearing to be alerted immediately by VADs so they can exit the building quickly. Not be left behind.
I'm sure some of you have experienced being left behind in Fire Drills (on the Toilet, sleeping etc) and not knowing the Fire Alarm is going off. Some times Fire Wardens missed us.
Let's change this by showing MBIE that VADs must be put in Public spaces for our safety.
Please share this petition with you family, friends, workmates and communities.
You are welcome to do the full MBIE Building Code - Fire Safety review questions too. See www link in the petition.
