Add the increasingly threatened Warsaw Grouper to The Endangered Species Act!
The Issue
The Warsaw Grouper is a rare species of fish which faces possible extinction due to overfishing by recreational and commercial fishing. Residing in the Western Atlantic Ocean, from Massachusetts to the Gulf of Mexico, down to Cuba, Trinidad and the coastline of South America, adults dwell at depths of 400 feet or more.
They experience an extremely painful death by barotrauma (the bends) when hooked and pulled from those depths. They are already very susceptible to overfishing due to biological constraints. They do not mature until nine years of age. They can live to be forty years of age or older. This incredible fish can reach 7.7 feet in length and weigh up to 440 pounds. The Warsaw Grouper deserves a place on the Endangered Species Act list. The National Marine Fisheries Service already declared the Warsaw Grouper as a species of concern in 2010. Over ninety percent of Warsaw Groupers are caught in the Gulf of Mexico. There are over one million licensed saltwater fishers in Florida alone. The Warsaw Grouper cannot survive under these type of environmental pressures.
If one species goes extinct, our entire ecosystem is thrown off balance. Please help protect the Warsaw Grouper by signing this petition in order to have it considered for placement on the United States Endangered Species Act!
