Add speed control measures on Cumberland Blvd in Porter
Add speed control measures on Cumberland Blvd in Porter
The Issue
The Cumberland Community is a small, quiet, family-focused community in Porter, Texas. Over the past few years, work has been done to add a new neighborhood, The Highlands, to the west of the Cumberland Neighborhood. When they build the access road to the Highlands off of the Grand Parkway, they did not build a continuous access road from Riley Fuzzel through to FM 1314. This made it impossible for Highlands residents to come and go without having to use the toll road. To mitigate this, a connection was recently opened from the Highlands through the Cumberland neighborhood via Cumberpand Blvd. While we welcome our neighbors to the west, and understand the difficulty they've had getting in and out of their neighborhood, this new expansion has caused some issues. The speed in the Highlands neighborhood is 35 mph, while the speed in Cumberland is 30 mph. Vehicles traveling to and from the Highlands, especially heavy construction vehicles, often exceed both the 30 and 35 mph speeds. This is dangerous for both traffic and pedestrians who travel down Cumberland Blvd. This is especially concerning considering the school zone in front of Crippen Elementary. The heavy trucks have also damaged the bridge on Cumberland Blvd.
We are asking that speed control measures and weight restrictions be implemented on Cumberland Blvd. Preferably, we would like speed humps rated for 25-30mph be installed before each intersection and at the beginning and end of the school zone. We would also like a speed limit signing noting the 30 mph speed change be placed at the beginning of the Cumberland Neighborhood on the east bound lane. This would greatly benefit our neighborhood and provide for safer travel for both Cumberland and Highlands residents.
