Add Somaliland as a country and flag emoji in iOS and Android

Add Somaliland as a country and flag emoji in iOS and Android
The Issue
We, the undersigned, respectfully request that Apple and Google include Somaliland as a selectable country/region within their mobile operating systems and support the Somaliland flag emoji as part of future Unicode and OS updates.
As a proud native of Somaliland, I feel the absence of our nation’s representation in the digital realm, specifically through iOS and Android operating systems. There is a deep emotional connection to seeing one's identity validated, especially in such globally influential spaces managed by leading tech giants like Apple Inc. and Google LLC. Therefore, it is pertinent for these companies to recognize Somaliland as a distinct entity by including it as a country option and providing a flag emoji.
WHO ARE WE ?
Somaliland is home to over 6 million people who have maintained peace, democratic governance, and stability for more than 34 years. Since 1991, Somaliland has functioned as a self-governing, democratic state, with its own:
- Elected government and parliament
- Constitution approved by referendum
- Currency (Somaliland Shilling)
- Passport and national ID system
- Security institutions that have ensured long-term regional stability
This extends to digital platforms which many of us use daily. Not having Somaliland as a selectable country option and no flag emoji in iOS and Android is a reminder of the geopolitical limbo we face, impacting individuals keen on reflecting their true identity online.
Inclusion of Somaliland on these platforms would not just be a step towards digital inclusivity, but also a means to promote cultural understanding and acceptance. This change would bolster the morale of the Somaliland diaspora globally, allowing us to communicate more authentically and proudly.
Apple and Google have the power to make a change that recognizes people's identity, just as they have done for many other regions. According to Statista, the global smartphone penetration was at 78% as of 2021, with Apple and Google dominating this market. Including Somaliland would therefore provide comfort to a significant number of users who feel excluded.
Why This Matters
Mobile operating systems are not only technical tools — they are also platforms of identity, visibility, and inclusion
We urge Apple Inc. and Google LLC to make the necessary updates to their operating systems. This requires minimal technical effort but holds immense significance for the people of Somaliland. This is about ensuring equitable representation for all cultures and identities in the digital world.
After more than three decades of peace, self-governance, and resilience, Somaliland’s people ask for a simple but meaningful acknowledgment:
the right to see themselves represented in the digital world they participate in every day.
Respectfully,
The people and supporters of Somaliland
Please sign this petition to support the addition of Somaliland flag as an emoji, fostering recognition and respect for Somaliland’s sovereignty and identity.
