The Issue

As a local table tennis lover in Norfolk, I've noticed the city unfortunately has very little to offer in terms of public spaces for casual and amateur table tennis players alike. These spaces are not just for playing a game; they are vital community resources where people come together, form bonds, and engage in physical activity. This is why I'm advocating for the addition of 2-3 metal outdoor table tennis tables at Northside Park. This initiative would offer a dedicated recreational space where residents and visitors of the Norfolk area can enjoy friendly competitive play, low stakes rallies, and a valuable means to connect with other local players.

Including these tables at Northside Park would not only enrich the park's recreational offerings, but also foster community building and promote a healthy, active lifestyle. Table tennis is an inclusive sport that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels, making it an ideal addition to the park’s range of activities.

In urban areas, where space is at a premium and many residents live in apartments without access to private outdoor space, parks become the community backyard. Enhancing Northside Park with table tennis facilities will ensure that more members of our community can enjoy outdoor activities without extensive travel or cost constraints.

The cost of installing these tables would be minimal in comparison to the long-term benefits of increased community engagement and physical activity. In other cities, outdoor ping pong tables have become a popular attraction, drawing enthusiasts and casual players alike, and we can replicate that success in Norfolk.

Moreover, providing space for outdoor table tennis will encourage diversity in park activities — a move that could potentially increase park usage and contribute to the local economy by attracting more visitors, including those from nearby areas.

I urge the Norfolk City Council to consider this proposal seriously, as it promises to add immense value to our community's public spaces. Let's make Northside Park a model for how inclusive, recreational spaces can transform and energize neighborhoods.

Please join me in asking the Norfolk City Council to approve this project by signing this petition. Together, we'll create a more connected and active community for everyone in Norfolk.

Thank you for reaching out and for sharing this petition and residents' feedback. I appreciate the advocacy and thoughtful perspective provided regarding the addition of outdoor table tennis tables at Northside Park. Expanding recreational opportunities in our parks, particularly those that promote inclusivity, community engagement, and active lifestyles, is something I strongly support. At this time, I will be forwarding this request to our Parks and Recreation team to explore whether the installation of 2–3 outdoor table tennis tables can be incorporated into any planned upgrades or future improvements at Northside Park. As you know, enhancements like these are typically evaluated within the broader scope of park planning, capital improvement projects, and available funding. I’m grateful to the residents who have taken the time to organize and bring attention to this idea. Community input plays a critical role in shaping how we invest in our shared spaces, and I encourage continued engagement as we assess opportunities like this. Please feel free to share this update with petition supporters, and I will provide additional updates as more information becomes available. Thank you again for helping elevate community voices. Sincerely, Councilman Carlos Clanton [Note: The Change.org Civic Engagement Team reaches out to decision makers to let them know about petitions in their community and to help facilitate engagement with supporters.
