The Issue

New York drivers and residents deserve the same convenience already available in 14 states and territories: the ability to add their driver's license or state ID to Apple Wallet.

Why this matters to me. I live in New York City and I travel, run errands, and move through this city the way millions of us do, with my phone in my hand and my wallet too often left behind. Last month I stood at an airport checkpoint watching travelers from other states tap their phones to verify their ID in seconds, while I dug through my bag for a plastic card. New York is one of the most technologically ambitious states in the country. There is no reason we should be behind on something this basic.

The problem. Today, New Yorkers are limited to a separate state Mobile ID app while neighboring states let residents present a secure, encrypted digital ID directly from their iPhone or Apple Watch at TSA checkpoints, participating businesses, and online. New York is falling behind on a feature that is already proven, widely adopted, and trusted.

The facts. As of April 2026, 14 states and territories support adding a driver's license or state ID to Apple Wallet. The technology uses the international ISO mobile driver's license (mDL) standard, the same standard Google and Samsung support, so this is established infrastructure, not an experiment. Digital IDs in Apple Wallet are already accepted at TSA checkpoints across hundreds of US airports for domestic travel. New York is conspicuously absent from a list that keeps growing.

Why it is safe. Apple Wallet IDs are encrypted and stored only on the user's device. When you present your ID, you share only the specific information requested, and nothing is transmitted to Apple. This is more privacy-protective than handing over a physical card that exposes every detail on its face.

The ask. We call on Governor Hochul and the New York State DMV to partner with Apple so New Yorkers can add their driver's license and state ID to Apple Wallet. The technology is proven and already live in states across the country. New Yorkers should not have to wait.
