Add Italian‑American struggles to Florida history standards

The Issue

Growing up as an Italian-American, my nonno shared countless stories of the hardships and racism faced by our community. It pains me deeply that these crucial chapters of American history are glossed over in our school curricula, depriving students of the knowledge and understanding of the struggles Italian-Americans historically faced. Moreover, witnessing the continuous Americanization of Italian food, fashion, and culture makes these omissions even more glaring and unacceptable.

The Florida Department of Education has the power to change this narrative by integrating the history of Italian-American struggles into the state's history standards. Doing so will not only honor the rich tapestry of diverse contributions to American society but will also promote a more inclusive educational environment where all students can appreciate the profound impact of various ethnic groups, including Italians.

Italian-Americans, like many other minority groups, faced significant discrimination upon their arrival in the United States. From the 19th to the mid-20th centuries, Italian immigrants encountered prejudice in employment, housing, and even education. This discrimination was not only a societal problem but was often institutionalized in policies and practices.

Incorporating these stories in school curricula will allow students to understand the struggles and triumphs of those who came before them, fostering empathy and cultural understanding. Highlighting the resilience and contributions of the Italian-American community affirms the importance of acknowledging and learning from the past.

Teaching about the struggles faced by Italian-Americans can also dispel stereotypes and encourage students to embrace diversity. It will give Italian-American students, like myself, a sense of pride in our heritage and identity, seeing our culture and contributions reflected in their education.

I urge the Florida Department of Education to amend the history standards to recognize the Italian-American experience as an integral part of American history education. Join me in calling for a more inclusive and accurate portrayal of our shared history. Sign this petition to ensure that the stories of Italian-American struggles are taught and acknowledged, inspiring future generations with the lessons of resilience, diversity, and unity.
