Add fences to protect wildlife on roads

Add fences to protect wildlife on roads
The issue
My heart breaks every time I see the aftermath of road accidents that involve our precious wildlife. As someone who truly loves animals, witnessing the unnecessary loss of life on our roads is devastating. We are privileged to live in a region teeming with unique species, and it's our responsibility to safeguard these creatures from preventable harm.
Every year, countless animals lose their lives due to collisions with vehicles in our area. According to Wildlife Preservation Society Queensland, road accidents claim thousands of animal lives annually across the state, posing a significant threat to local biodiversity. These fatalities include kangaroos, wallabies, and even cassowaries—our own living dinosaurs.
There is a straightforward solution: adding fences along critical roadways to prevent animals from wandering onto roads. This has been successfully implemented in various regions, significantly reducing vehicle-animal collisions. By installing fences and wildlife crossings, we can coexist with our beloved wildlife while ensuring their safety.
I urge the local government and transport authorities to prioritise this issue and allocate resources for the construction of these essential protective measures. This is not just about animal welfare but also about preserving the natural beauty and biodiversity that make Cairns such a special place.
One more thing to mention, is that if you're wondering if they wanted to get to the other side of the road and how, at areas where there are less cars driving through there will be an animal crossing, cars will be warned about incoming animals, and the speed will be lowered to 20.
Please join me in calling for immediate action to add wildlife-protection fences on our roads. Sign this petition today to voice your support for this vital cause.
Let's work together to preserve our beautiful wildlife for future generations.
