Every September, we reflect on National Suicide Prevention Month—a time to remember those we've lost to suicide, honor those who struggle with suicidal thoughts, and support families and communities impacted by these tragedies. Mental health needs to be a priority, and this includes addressing a critical issue: the suicide of law enforcement officers resulting from service-related trauma.

We often discuss the physical dangers officers face on the streets but overlook the mental burdens they carry home. Suicide is a growing concern in the law enforcement community, and yet, because of gaps in national reporting, we lack a clear understanding of its full scope. The time has come to address these omissions and ensure that mental health challenges faced by officers are recognized and supported.

One issue that I feel deeply passionate about is correctly honoring officers who die by suicide due to trauma experienced in the line of duty. Currently, even when the Department of Justice recognizes an officer's suicide as service-related, this doesn't guarantee they'll be commemorated on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial or be acknowledged during the Candlelight Vigil. This is a profound oversight. If an officer's mental health injuries truly contributed to their passing, their sacrifice should be fully recognized and honored. Mental and physical injuries sustained in service can be equally devastating, and both deserve acknowledgment.

By adding officers who die by suicide to the National Memorial and ensuring they are remembered during significant ceremonies, we not only honor their contributions but also highlight the urgent need for comprehensive mental health support in law enforcement. This recognition is a step toward ensuring that mental health resources are prioritized and that no officer feels they must face these challenges alone.
