Add disability inclusion to the national school curriculum

Add disability inclusion to the national school curriculum
The Issue
We are Amaira and Eva. We are 12 years old.. Growing up, we watched our father, a wheelchair user, face countless obstacles in everyday life. Navigating public spaces, accessing services, and interacting with people often presented unnecessary challenges. This personal experience opened our eyes to the broader issues faced by the 1.6 billion people around the world who live with some form of disability.
The lack of awareness and understanding about disabilities in our society is largely due to the absence of education on this critical topic. If we want an inclusive and accessible world, it must start with education from an early age. Teaching children about disability inclusion, accessibility, and respectful language can foster empathy, understanding, and mutual respect among future generations.
By integrating disability inclusion as a subject in the national curriculum of primary and secondary schools, we can ensure that our children grow up recognizing and valuing the diversity of human experiences. This can lead to more informed citizens who are capable of creating policies that support and include everyone.
Countries like Australia and Canada are already paving the way by including disability education in their school systems, showing us that it's not only possible but necessary. Implementing a curriculum that addresses different disabilities with age-appropriate teaching can dismantle the barriers that exist today.
The UK now has a real opportunity.
With discussions underway about the future of the national curriculum, this is the moment to ensure disability inclusion is intentionally built in — not left to chance.
This initiative is not just a win for those with disabilities – it's a step forward for society as a whole. An inclusive world acknowledges the potential and rights of everyone, and this education can shape communities where everyone feels welcome and valued.
We are calling upon educators, policymakers, and concerned citizens to support the integration of disability inclusion into our national curriculum. Let’s create an environment where understanding and acceptance are the norm rather than the exception.
Please sign and share this petition to help make disability inclusion a priority in education, shaping a future where everyone belongs.
