Add Auslan as an official language subject in the Australian curriculum

Add Auslan as an official language subject in the Australian curriculum

The issue

Did you know that only around 16,000 people In Australia know Auslan? And 1 in 6 people in Australia are deaf? Hi, I'm Georgie and I would love everyone to have the opportunity to learn Auslan as part of their education. Now, I know what all the kids out there are thinking and the adults too great another boring subjects to add to my/my Childs busy day at school, well it's not. It is a crucial step towards making sure everyone feel included and welcome. Having more people who know Auslan is a crucial step towards making ALL hearing impaired people feel included, welcomed and have more opportunities. This will help shape a fairer Australia where everyone has a say and feels included.

Firstly, if we add Auslan to the Australian curriculum, it will promote a sense of inclusion among school communities. It will mean that people who are hearing impaired will be able to attend more schools and ultimately make people with hearing impairment feel more included.

Secondly, having more students and teachers who know Auslan will create opportunities not seen before not just for children who are hearing impaired, but more opportunities for the broader deaf community. It would mean more deaf people could become teachers and would help everyone make new friends and learn more.

Thirdly, Auslan is an amazing and rich subject. When we learn it we chip a tiny piece into the larger puzzle of the Australia, the fair, beautiful country you see today. Learning Auslan is a crucial part Australia stepping forwards and working towards being an even better, more inclusive country were everyone feels like they have a right to speak up.

Finally, studies show that when students learn Auslan, their studies excel and they end up being better off in life because they learnt Auslan at a young age. So, adding Auslan to the curriculum now will help shape future generations in the best way possible to help Australia.

Learning Auslan will enrich school communities and the broader community too. It will help future generations and not only benefit the people who learn it, but the people who they communicate with, and the people outside in the broader community of Australia. Learning Auslan in schools will not only promote fairness and give people more opportunities, it will create a family, not just for hearing impaired people, but it will create a connection between hearing impaired people and people who aren't hearing impaired. It will make a bridge for exclusion to inclusion. Thank you for reading and I hope you sign my petition to Add Auslan 2 Schools NOW!!!!
