Since my last update in mid-January, we’ve learned several things regarding the Braddock & Sanders crosswalk.
The pedestrian that was struck crossing Braddock near Sanders was Davor Wagner, a resident of Edgewood. He was walking home after dinner at D’s Six Pax & Dogz on the evening of January 17 when he was hit by one car and run over by a second car. He sustained three broken ribs and a bruised head and spent five days in the hospital. His recovery continues. Davor is a gardener and landscaper: http://www.thisyardofmine.com/
The traffic study that Edgewood and Swissvale ordered is proceeding. This is the study that the boroughs reluctantly agreed to in December after the petition came out. The traffic engineers made their observations of car traffic, pedestrians, and sight lines on a Thursday and a Saturday in mid-January, we are told.
At a Swissvale council meeting on 1/25, I asked if the petition comments had been forwarded to the traffic engineers (in December I printed copies of the 300+ comments received on the petition and gave them to all borough council members, and I also excerpted 11 representative comments, e.g. recollections of family members nearly hit crossing the street near there). Reading between the lines of the answer, it appears that the boroughs did not give those printouts to the traffic engineers, but gave a link to the petition, and if the engineers are so inclined and hit the right link on the web page, they could see more than three comments. This is disappointing, as it suggests the boroughs have attempted to subtly bias the traffic engineers against a crosswalk at Sanders.
A story about the petition and Davor Wagner’s injury appeared in City Paper today:

What next?
1. There is a Swissvale council meeting tonight (Wed. 2/1 at 7pm), and an Edgewood meeting Mon. 2/6 at 7:30pm. I plan to attend the latter, at least. All of you are welcome to show up and speak briefly about your concerns. We expect the results of the traffic study maybe in late February.
2. Independently, an open house regarding TAP grant plans (crosswalk changes other than Sanders) is planned for 2/23, 7:30pm in Swissvale.
3. If you know about injuries, near-injuries, or crashes along Braddock, please email them to me at ph@cs.cmu.edu. We’d like names, dates, and descriptions of incidents. Police records are incomplete. Thanks.
