El conveni d’amistat i agermanament entre Barcelona i Istanbul es va signar el 5 de gener de 1997. Amb aquest acord, Barcelona i Istanbul, pretenen intensificar les relacions existents entre les dues ciutats. L’objectiu és impulsar accions que permetin intercanviar coneixements i experiències en la gestió municipal i aprofundir en les relacions humanes entre els seus ciutadans entre les ciutats catalana i turca. L’agermanament constitueix el compromís mutu per establir vincles d’interès comú dels dos municipis.

El 9 d'octubre el batlle d'Istanbul, Ekrem Imamoglu, va explicitar el suport de la seva ciutat a la invasió, sense cap pretext, del Nord de Síria. Això topa frontalment amb els valors de la pau, no violència, legalitat internacional, respecte entre pobles que diu defensar Barcelona. La invasió està generant una catàstrofe humanitària a dos milions de persones i suposa violacions de la Convenció de Ginebra amb bombardeigs contra zones civils i assassinats de civils desarmats o polítiques com Hevrîn Helef, secretària general del Partit pel Futur de Síria.

The agreement for friendship and twinning between Barcelona and Istanbul was signed on January 5, 1997. With this agreement, Barcelona and Istanbul, they intend to intensify the existing relationships between the two cities. The objective is to promote actions that allow the exchange of knowledge and experiences in municipal management and deepen in human relations between its citizens between the Catalan and Turkish cities. Twinning constitutes a mutual commitment to establish links of common interest between the two municipalities.

On October 9, Batlle of Istanbul, Ekrem Imamoglu, explained the support of his city to the invasion, without any pretext, of the North of Syria.
