Acton Boxborough HS and Jr High Tennis Courts are in dire need of repair
The Issue
As you can see in the attached picture, many cracks have developed over the last several years in the Acton Boxborough Regional High School (ABRHS) and Jr High tennis courts. These cracks not only significantly affect player performance by altering ball trajectory and footwork, but have also caused numerous injuries to our players, some of which have been major. These courts are used not only by High School Varsity and Jr Varsity teams, but also extensively used by Acton & Boxborough town residents of all ages.
We were informed that the cracks were to be repaired in Fall 2022, and again in summer 2023, but sadly, nothing has been done. If we don’t act now, we fear that the courts will be in the same condition for the coming HS tennis seasons. What makes this worse is that other schools in our Dual County League (DCL) and in adjacent towns have tennis courts in pristine condition, and often complain about the condition of our courts.
The ABRHS tennis teams are among the best in Division 1 of the MIAA. Some recent achievements and awards:
- AB Girl’s Tennis (ABGT) won the state championship in 2018, 2019, and 2021, and made it to the Final Four (semifinals) in 2022, 2023
- AB Boy’s Tennis won the state championship in 2017, 2022
- In 2022-2023, 3 players on the boy’s team and 5 on the girl’s team were named DCL all stars, including the DCL Player of the Year for girls. We have always had multiple all-stars in the DCL list.
We created this petition to help convince our school to expedite the repair process and provide a safer playing environment - not just for the high school teams, but also for the Acton-Boxborough community overall.
