In April 2026, my life was turned upside down when our home in Naughton was severely flooded. What was once a place of comfort and safety became uninhabitable, and for 3 months, my family and I have been unable to return or begin rebuilding our lives. I am but one of many residents who have faced this devastating situation, with homes damaged, lives disrupted, and communities left in distress.

The flooding event in April 2026 wreaked havoc across our region, affecting many families and causing substantial damage to homes. Despite the clear need for aid and support, the Ontario government has yet to activate the Disaster Relief Assistance program for the affected areas. This program is crucial for providing the necessary financial support for repairs, rebuilding efforts, and for helping families regain a sense of normalcy.

According to Environment Canada, April 2026 saw unprecedented rainfall in the Sudbury area, making it one of the wettest months in recent history, with nearly 150mm of rain falling within a single week. This level of rainfall combined with significant snow melt overwhelmed our drainage systems and riverbanks, leading to the extensive flooding. The Provincial Disaster Relief Assistance guidelines clearly state that such extreme weather events qualify for government intervention and support.

Communities like ours in Greater Sudbury are resilient, but we cannot navigate this crisis alone. We urgently need the Ontario government's intervention to activate the Disaster Relief Assistance program (DRAO) to facilitate recovery efforts. By initiating this program, the government would not only be helping families repair their homes but also supporting the broader community in restoring local infrastructure and businesses. This action would bring much-needed relief and hope to many affected residents, underscoring the government's commitment to supporting its citizens in times of crisis.

We urge the Ontario government to take immediate action and recognize the dire need for assistance and recovery in Greater Sudbury. Let's come together to push for the activation of the Disaster Relief Assistance program (DRAO) so that families and communities can begin to heal and rebuild.
