Act now: insufficient safety measures on London Underground are putting our lives at risk

The Issue

I am a survivor, but my life has been irrevocably altered due to a horrific accident on the London Underground.

A wet uneven platform led me to slip and fall through the gap between the train and platform. Two trains ran over me, resulting in the loss of my right arm and leg.

No one heard my screams and I remained there for 15 minutes before I was eventually found.

Despite being grateful for surviving such an ordeal, I am now permanently disabled.

Transport for London (TfL) has yet to accept liability or make any significant changes to its safety procedures even after a year since my accident. I believe that neither TFL nor their regulator, the Office of Rail and Road properly investigated what happened to me.

The current state of affairs is unacceptable - in my case CCTV cameras were not monitored live. I feel that there was insufficient staff presence at the station, safety protocols were overlooked, emergency training was inadequate and the train drivers were inattentive.

In a statement TfL alleges this was a freak accident but according to its own figures they record an average of 16 incidents a month. Others have not been as lucky as me and have been killed as a result.

This personal tragedy is not just about me; it's about two million Londoners who commute daily via the Underground. It's about my children who use public transport, instilling fear in me for their safety every day. Hundreds of people have contacted me with their own stories of accidents and near misses. This is a widespread issue that concerns us all. Ticket prices keep increasing but safety keeps decreasing at our expense. That is not ok.

Simply stating ‘Mind the gap’ and putting the responsibility on the paying customer is not enough. We urge TfL not just "to mind" but "to close" dangerous gaps at platforms that pose serious threats.

We need there to be an independent and comprehensive review of TFL’s safety procedures so that meaningful lessons can be learnt before anyone else gets hurt or killed in this way.

We need as many signatures as possible for this important topic to be discussed in Parliament, please sign and share widely. Thank you for your support!
