Acknowledge Anthony Collins' Right to Self-Defense: Reevaluate Unjust Prison Sentence

Acknowledge Anthony Collins' Right to Self-Defense: Reevaluate Unjust Prison Sentence
The Issue
As someone who has personally endured racial slurs and aggressive behavior due to my ethnicity, this issue strikes close to my heart. It is with utmost urgency that I address the case of Anthony Collins, a 41-year-old man who has been unfairly sentenced to three years in prison for an act of self-defense. A victim of consistent racial slurs and targeted outbreaks not only towards him, but also his wife and children, Anthony's position is one that many are unfortunately familiar with.
On the day in question, Anthony was faced with an escalation of violence from Robert May, a 70-year-old man who had been harassing Anthony and his family repetitively. Robert hit his head on the curb due to Anthony’s counter attack. Robert, adamantly refused medical attention, and two weeks later he died. The judiciary overlooked the crucial fact that Anthony acted out of self-defense, a right recognized universally and protected by the law.
According to the National Institute of Justice, U.S., the 'Castle Doctrine' allows individuals the right to use force in self-defense when there is reasonable belief of an impending threat. Contrary to this, Anthony has been blamed and punished for a tragedy that ensued from him standing up against racial maltreatment.
We must bring attention to Anthony's unjust sentence and this disregard for his right to protect himself and his family. It's time we lived in a society where defending oneself from racial abuse was considered a right, not a crime.
Let us rally behind Anthony Collins and his family. Let us demand justice. Please, sign this petition.
