Gov. Newsom, Acknowledge All California Tribes
The Issue
END the California Native American GENOCIDE
California has yet to fully acknowledge the continued existence and plight of its Non-Federally Acknowledged Tribes and Bands.
California has the highest concentration of Non-Federally Acknowledged Tribes in the United States. This is not an accident.
In 1852, 18 treaties were signed between the United States and approximately 134 California Tribes and Bands. Under pressure from California representatives, Congress failed to ratify these treaties and ordered them kept secret. For more than 170 years, California Native people have lived with the consequences of this broken promise.
This history has contributed to what many describe as “genocide through bureaucracy”—the systematic denial of tribal existence and legitimacy, resulting in the loss of land, resources, cultural protections, language, and opportunities for future generations.
Today, more than 80,000 California Indians are affected by the lack of federal recognition, with many families experiencing poverty and continued barriers to cultural and governmental resources. Tribal languages and cultures face extinction.
On June 19, 2019, Governor Gavin Newsom apologized on behalf of the State of California for the California Indian Genocide. Yet California's Non-Federally Acknowledged Tribes were not included in that formal process.
Healing requires recognition.
We call upon Governor Newsom to establish, through Executive Order, a lawful and inclusive process for California State Tribal Acknowledgement of ALL Tribes and Bands Indigenous to California.
