ACCESS 19 BLONO: Lower the Legal Club and Bar Entry Age From 21 to 19

The Issue

As an event host, student, and active member of the BloNo community, alongside many like-minded individuals, I challenge the policy that puts the legal entry age for bars and clubs at 21. We believe it is in our community's best interest if that age is reduced to 19. Many of us active in clubs and bars as employees or patrons believe this age restriction is not only outdated, but also negatively impacts our experiences and economic opportunities.

A 2018 study by the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs found that the drinking age doesn't prevent under-age alcohol abuse, but rather encourages secretive and binge drinking due to the social prohibitions. This suggests that the 21-age restriction does not fully address the broader issues around safe alcohol consumption.

Many countries, such as Canada and various nations in Europe, have a legal drinking and entry age below 21. Compared to the U.S., these places tend to have fewer alcohol-related incidents among young people, suggesting a lower age limit does not necessarily yield greater harm.

By lowering the bar and club entry age to 19, we would be aligning ourselves with a more global and transparent approach to alcohol consumption, fostering safer and more inclusive environments for everyone.

I, and those who share my view from BloNo, request you to reconsider our current age restriction for bars and clubs. Please support our push to lower the legal club and bar entry age from 21 to 19. Sign this petition today.
