Abusing Elephants For Competition At Gauriswara Temple violating Supreme Court Order

Abusing Elephants For Competition At Gauriswara Temple violating Supreme Court Order
The Issue
2 elephants named puthupally kesavan and chirakkal kalidasan were abused at the cherayi Grouriswara temple by forcing them to participate in a competition to identify the elephant having the maximum capacity to keep their forehead upwards for a time period of more than 5 minutes. The police officials of that area remained as mere organizations of that illegal competition. Even though we had given telephonic compliant to the intelligent wing of Kerala forest department, the officials from the palarivattam office of the state forest department’s flying squad remind idle without trying to stop this type of illegal use of elephants. The provisions of the Wildlife Protection Act 1972 specifically state that wild animals should not be used for any type of competitions. More over, compelling elephants to keep their forehead upwards is violation the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. The SPCA of Ernakulam also remained as mute spectators of this type of elephant torture. This temple had today published an advertisement at a prominent Malayalam daily by printing the pictures of these two elephants and had given publicity for this type of illegal competition. Even after seeing this advertisement, the district collector who is also the chairman of district committee for the prevention of cruelty to elephants also remained as mute spectator of this type of illegal competition involving elephants. Therefore we expect that your authoritative office initiate strict penal action against all the person who were party to this type of elephant torture and arrest all such offenders as early as possible. Today at around 3 pm, this temple will also conduct an unauthorized elephant parade of 30 elephants inside its compound without obtaining statutory permission from the district collector of Ernakulam. The district collector of Ernakulam is working an agent of elephant contractors and festival organizers who parade elephants flouting all the elephant parade rule ordered by supreme court of India on 18th August 2015.
