Abolition of Squat Toilets in Milan and Throughout Italy

El problema

Dear citizens,

Many people have long expressed their discomfort regarding the widespread use of squat toilets in public places such as schools, offices, stations, and other public buildings. We believe it is time to modernize our sanitary facilities and offer more comfortable and accessible restrooms for everyone. Therefore, we propose the abolition of squat toilets in Milan and throughout Italy.

  1. Comfort and Accessibility: Squat toilets are uncomfortable for many people, especially the elderly, people with disabilities, pregnant women, and children. The adoption of standard toilets would ensure greater comfort and accessibility for all.
  2. Hygiene: Squat toilets can be difficult to keep clean and hygienic. Contact with dirty surfaces is more likely, and cleaning is more complicated. Standard toilets are easier to clean and can help improve sanitary conditions in public places.
  3. Gender Aspect: Women find the use of squat toilets particularly uncomfortable and unhygienic, often facing greater difficulties compared to men. Providing more adequate and comfortable restrooms is a matter of respect and gender equity.
  4. Modernization of Infrastructure: Italy needs to modernize its sanitary infrastructure to meet international standards. Eliminating squat toilets and replacing them with standard toilets is a step towards greater modernity and progress.
  5. Safety: Squat toilets can pose a risk of falls and accidents, especially for people with reduced mobility or balance issues. The use of standard toilets significantly reduces these risks, ensuring greater safety for all users.
  6. Tourism: Many tourists visit Italy every year, and unfortunately, some leave with a poor impression of our country due to squat toilets. Providing modern and clean restrooms will enhance the tourist experience, contributing positively to Italy's image as a welcoming and advanced destination.

We call on the Municipality of Milan and the Italian Government to consider our request and initiate a plan to replace squat toilets with standard toilets in all public facilities. This initiative will not only improve the well-being and comfort of citizens but also help create a more modern and hygienic environment for everyone.
