Abolish Unlawful Council Tax Payments

Abolish Unlawful Council Tax Payments
The Issue
After getting into £6k debt and having £700 a month taken from my wage, I reached out to the council to set up a payment plan. Instead of receiving understanding or assistance, I was met with hostility. I was shouted at, and the council informed me of their surveillance on social media accounts. Now, they threaten me with legal action if this year's debt cannot be paid. This is not just my story; it is the experience of many, trapped in this cycle of financial strain and harsh enforcement.
Council tax is an outdated system, funded from the pockets of citizens who have not agreed to such charges. It is unlawful to make people pay for something they have not consented to or contracted for. In 2021, the Local Government Association reported a collection deficit of over £1 billion, a clear indication of the public's struggle and an unfair burden on citizens already grappling with economic instability.
There are viable alternatives that can replace this oppressive tax. Local funding could be sourced through fairer, income-based contributions or government reallocation of funds, ensuring that everyone contributes according to their means without being pushed into debt. This is not only feasible but necessary to align with the principles of fairness and respect for citizens' financial situations.
The pressing need is to reassess and abolish the current council tax system. By reforming how local services are funded, we can prevent undue stress on families who are already facing economic challenges and ensure a just and equitable system for all.
We call upon the government to lift the council tax requirements, halting any actions that force individuals into financial or legal distress. Please sign this petition to end unlawful council tax payments and support a system that respects citizen rights and financial realities. By signing, we stand together for reform and fairness. Together, we can work towards a more equitable solution for funding public services without the unfair burden of outdated taxation policies.
