Abolish the Use of the Term ”Wife Beater” for Sleeveless Undershirts

The Issue

I am reaching out as a community advocate in Miami, Florida, with over 20 years of experience in public health, including HIV prevention and substance use intervention. Through my work and volunteer efforts in domestic violence workshops (NO MORE BROKEN HEARTS) D-2 MDCPS with Dr. Dorothy Bendross Mindingall and my General Federation of Womens Club (GFWC ) community initiatives, I have witnessed firsthand the lasting trauma that intimate partner violence inflicts on individuals and families. A particular point of contention is the continued use of the term “wife beater” to describe a specific style of sleeveless undershirt. This term is deeply problematic as it normalizes and trivializes domestic violence, associating a common article of clothing with harmful stereotypes and the horrifying reality of gender-based violence.

Moreover, the term perpetuates harmful narratives that downplay the severity of domestic abuse. This contributes to an ongoing cycle of desensitization towards gender-based violence and amounts to a tacit societal acceptance of these heinous acts. The World Health Organization reports that 1 in 3 women have experienced physical or sexual violence mostly by an intimate partner in their lifetime, reflecting the gravity of the issue we're facing.

Continued use of such derogatory language only goes to nourish a toxic culture, rather than fight against it. By making this small change in the language we use, we can dismantle the embedded normalizations of violence in our society. It's time to banish this term to the annals of history, and replace it with a label that respects the dignity of all individuals. Please sign this petition to take the first stand against quotidien linguistic reminders of domestic violence.
