 In the United States, a country that touts itself a beacon of equality and human rights, an abhorrent practice still exists. Most of America's states allow the use of an individual's sexual orientation and/or gender identity as a “panic” defense in cases of violent crimes, even murder. Scarily enough, victims don't even need to identify themselves as LGBTQ+; the mere insinuation can become an excuse for such hate crimes. These panic defenses serve to vilify the victims and seldom bring their perpetrators to justice. As a person who strongly believes in equality for all, it is horrifying to witness such an injustice.

Scientific and legal discussions have long discredited this defense as it is based on irrational fear, hence, it has no place in our justice system. According to the LGBT Bar Association, these so-called "defenses" are legally-sanctioned discrimination that leads to grossly reduced sentences for violent offenders.

It is high time we end such acts that seem to justify hate crimes against the LGBTQ+ community. Let us demand justice for all citizens regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity — because everyone has the right to live safely, without fear of being targeted for who they are or how they choose to express themselves, and never getting justice.
