The Student Union at Toronto Metropolitan University has been a subject of controversy for quite some time now. Many students feel that it does not adequately represent their interests or use its funds in a manner that benefits the student body as a whole. According to data from the 2019-2020 academic year, less than half of the student population participated in union elections, indicating widespread disengagement (source: TMU Annual Report). This year, "The voting report shows less than five per cent turnout, with only 1,906 of the 39,510 eligible voters participating" (The Eyeopener). Moreover, there have been numerous complaints about lack of transparency regarding how union dues are spent (source: TMU Student Survey 2020). We believe it's time for change. By abolishing this current structure, we can pave the way for a more democratic and accountable system that truly serves all students.
