Abolish the Statute of Limitations on Child Molestation - Justice for Survivors

The Issue

I, as the creator of this petition, am deeply committed to seeking justice for survivors of child molestation. This cause is personal to me because I was a victim myself, enduring unspeakable abuse at the hands of my own father between 1997 and 1999 when I was just 8 years old. The fear and trauma silenced me until I found the courage to speak up at the age of 13. Despite reporting this heinous crime as a child, no action was taken by authorities.

Now, as an adult survivor who is no longer afraid, I am devastated to learn that due to the statute of limitations in place before 2010, there is seemingly no legal recourse available for survivors like myself. It is unjust that those who suffered such horrific acts prior to this date are denied their right to seek justice.

Child molestation has devastating and long-lasting effects on its victims. Survivors often struggle with mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and even suicidal thoughts. By imposing time limits through statutes of limitations on these cases, we perpetuate a system that fails survivors by denying them their fundamental right to confront their abusers and seek justice.

It should not matter when these crimes occurred; what matters is that they happened at all. Every survivor deserves an opportunity for closure and healing through legal means regardless of how much time has passed since their abuse took place.

Supporting Facts:
1) According to RAINN (Rape Abuse & Incest National Network), only about one out of every three sexual assaults are reported.
2) The National Sexual Violence Resource Center states that it takes an average of 21 years for a survivor to disclose childhood sexual abuse.
3) Research conducted by Drs. David Finkelhor and Richard Ormrod found that the majority of child sexual abuse victims never disclose their abuse until adulthood.

These facts highlight the complex nature of reporting child molestation and the significant barriers survivors face in seeking justice. The statute of limitations should not further hinder their path to healing and closure.

By abolishing the statute of limitations on child molestation, we can ensure that survivors are given a fair chance to confront their abusers, seek justice, and prevent future harm to others. It is time for our legal system to prioritize the rights and well-being of survivors over outdated restrictions.

I urge you to sign this petition in support of abolishing the statute of limitations on child molestation. Together, we can make a difference by standing up for justice, empowering survivors, and creating a safer society for all children.

Thank you for your support.
