In the US, all men between the ages of 18 to 25 are required by federal law to register with the Selective Service System (SSS). The SSS means that you are eligible to be drafted in the event of a war. There are many reasons to abolish the draft:

1. The government has no right to send you off to die. If people won’t volunteer to go to war, then the country maybe isn’t worth fighting for. And all veterans will tell you that they do not want to work alongside draftees who don’t want to be there.
2. The SSS is sexist. It is sex discrimination as it only targets men. Men can be banned from getting driver’s license, federal loans etc. if they refuse to sign, while women are given these “benefits” without having to register. And as we’ve seen before, many people (mostly Conservative politicians) are against the idea of including women in the draft, so the only option is to remove it completely. To men, the SSS is basically seeing them as unimportant and invaluable to society. To women, the SSS reinforces the idea that women are weak and incapable. No one benefits from it. And when people argue that women give birth so that’s their service, unless women are forced to give birth, it can’t be compared to the SSS (and the government can never conscript women to give birth because that would be unconstitutional and cause riots).
3. The SSS removes parental rights. No parent should be forced to force their son to sign up for the possibility of going to war.
4. Men are coerced into registering with the SSS by being ineligible for things such as driver’s licences and government jobs if they don’t sign up.
5. Registering with the SSS is unconstitutional as it is involuntary servitude. It’s not really “selective” if it’s mandatory.
6. High schoolers who aren’t even out of school yet are pressured to sign the form.
7. The SSS forces certain religious people to go against their religious beliefs if their religion promotes pacifism. The US constitution guarantees the freedom to practice religion. The government shams no right to force people to do things against their religious beliefs.
8. There isn’t even an active draft so the SSS is a waste of taxpayers money.
9. The former SSS director admitted in 2019 that the SSS register was incomplete since a lot of people failed to register, so there isn’t much point in even having it.
10. The SSS is used as a “government tracking tool”, yet Social Security and IRS has people’s details, so the SSS is pointless in that respect.
11. The government hasn’t prosecuted anyone for not registering with the SSS since the 1980s, which proves that the SSS is outdated and unnecessary, and just a waste of money.
12. People say there will never be a war that requires a draft again, but the truth is that we can never be sure. World War I was supposed to be the war that ended all wars, but what happened? World War II happened. World War II was supposed to end all ears, but what happened? The Cold War? Did the government learn their lesson after Korea? No. Instead they went into Vietnam. The government and Congress could send you off to war at any time, so the SSS must be abolished!
13. If there was a war and all 18 to 25 year old males were drafted, the population would be massively affected. Many men would die, and a lot of men would come back unable to function in society. The SSS targets one of the most crucial demographics in society: young adults.
14. Congress has continuously allowed bills to die each year that suggest repealing the Selective Service System. There’s currently a bill to repeal it, and it’s time for Congress to take it seriously.
15. With world conflicts increasing, it’s possible that war may be a reality. Although it is unlikely, it is better safe than sorry.
16. The registration process is really confusing for immigrants who don’t know if they’re exempt or not.
17. A lot of states sign men up automatically when the get driver’s license. This removes their freedom and autonomy.
